Astro Empires is one of the many free space games you can play through your web browser and is similar to the popular title OGame. Players start with one planet and over the course of time develop the infrastructure of the planet with mines, shipyards, power plants, research facilities and other important buildings. Players can also research powerful technologies on the planet that unlock the multitude of ship types in the game. Other structures can be built too such as barracks and different planet defenses such as missile batteries and laser turrets. As a player you won’t want to go at it alone in this vast galaxy you’ll need friends in an alliance to succeed. You’ll find plenty of people in alliances willing to help you out as you learn this great space MMO war game.

Game Economy
The economy of Astro Empires is run by the use of credits. By making goods the player can increase their overall credits and make more ships in the game. Credits are also used to build and upgrade structures such as shipyards and barracks. Trade routes can also be created between different planets which can further increase the number of credits flowing. By joining alliances you can trade back and forth and have a robust economy for your team. Some structures in the game can also help to increase credit levels.

Technology/Ships
Technology also players a role in the game to build and upgrade ships. You have techs such as missiles, armor, shields, warp drive, stellar drive and many others. Each progressive upgrade will grant the player different ship types to build in the game. Many different ships are also available in the game such as fighters, bombers, destroyers, carriers, frigates, corvettes and many others. The outpost ship can grant you the ability to build a new base on another planet. By upgrading your structures you can unlock more research possibilities too. Some ships such as carriers also give you the ability to carry fighters long distances into battle. Oddly enough like many space games of this nature you will find a Death Star as the top ship you can build which is on loan from Darth Vader.

General Game Play
Astro Empires offers some great game play with plenty of different ships, technology, and structures to build. The map is vast with many different galaxies and sectors to explore. You’ll find forums with helpful guides and tables which explain what you need to build everything in the game. The site also has its own Wiki pages where you can learn more about the game. The game doesn’t have any real graphics to speak of except for some basic pictures of the different ship types and graphics for the planets but the game doesn’t need them. There’s enough strategy here to keep players interested for a long time but it isn’t for everyone since you need to wait for things to build in the game. Astro Empires is recommended if you like free space games and empire building.

Now we see thousands of people playing online games such as tetris, ping pong, mario bros, super mario etc for free but despite its history dating back to 1970s, for most people online gaming began with the explosion of Internet in 1993 and with the advent of Doom and Warcraft sometime in 1994 or 1995. This got further boost with publishers starting to add Internet connectivity to computer games in 1994-95.

The media, in fact, have themselves been ignorant about online games history. As far as they are concerned, online gaming just coincidentally happened when their advertisers started producing Internet-capable games. But it isn’t so…

Early Years of development

In early 1950′s a college student created a game much like Tic-Tac-Toe for a class project to be played on dinosaur computers of those days complete with cathode ray tubes for the screen display. The 1960′s had MIT students programming a game called “Space war” that could be played with two people over a primitive network. The late 1960′s brought the first “real” video games like table tennis and shooter games.

The 70s – the game begins

Serious online gaming began with the first interactive online game called ADVENT. In fact networked gaming got conceptualized with ADVENT. Networked gaming had users playing against each other within an online fantasy world. The first networked game was called Mazewar, a game which involved networked players traveling through a maze and attempting to kill one another.

Next came the interpersonal interaction in a multi-player environment. The first such game was called DUNGEN. DUNGEN had players competing against one another to complete a series of quests. DUNGEN provided with new settings and players each time the user logged on.

The late 1970′s saw the start of video game craze with more and more households getting computer savvy. As a natural corollary, people started writing their own games for the home computers. These programming hobbyists traded and sold these home-grown games in local markets.

Other changes in the 1970′s were home gaming consoles which used game cartridges. That meant the people could collect games cartridges for one base unit instead of having bulky game console systems.

The 80s – some pause before the storm

1980′s saw growing craze for the video and computer game craze, but online gaming wasn’t on the horizon yet. New games with better sound and graphics were introduced and gained popularity. Pole Position and Pac-man were two that achieved big popularity. It was during 1980′s when Nintendo introduced its first gaming system.

The 90s – revolution begins

The 1990′s saw the phenomenal growth in both popularity and technology mostly because of the rise of 3-D and multimedia.

Myst, the intellectual adventure game introduced gaming on the CD-ROM format. Fancier 3-D graphics hardware made FPS (first person shooter) games such as Quake possible.

The late 1990′s saw the exponential growth of the Internet, MUDs (multi-user dungeons) which made online games wildly popular. New and improved graphical interfaces had people all over the world playing against each other not only in FPS games but also in real time strategy games (RTS games) as well as third person games like Grand Theft Auto.

This was also the period when websites started offering online games such as tetris, ping pong, mario bros, super Mario, and other free online flash games and non-flash based games free for playing after registering with them. This really pushed online gaming into the popular psyche.

The 21st Century – world is just a playground

Early years of the 21st century were dominated by the DVD-CD-ROM. It has changed the way online games are played. The latest gaming systems such as Sony’s play station and Microsoft’s X-box have networking capabilities to enable people play with each other in real time from all over the world. Exponentially growing broadband internet services have made playing these online games possible in true sense of the word.

The only drawback to the constantly evolving technology for online games is that what you buy today might become obsolete by the next year. Luckily, for the serious gamers, the resale industry for these online games is huge. This resale industry is just another element to the ever-changing history of online game.

Once they have visited the sites, the players have the option of playing the game offered or choosing their own puzzles. These games come with three levels of difficulty: easy, medium and hard. Players can start with the easy ones to learn about the basic facts of Sudoku and then proceed to the others as they continue playing. It is up to them to know what type of site to select and start playing away. Those who want the downloadable versions should ensure that they have read and understood the system requirements that are needed, in order to install the software and enjoy the games offered.

Each puzzle has its on unique solution and the player is required to fill in the blanks with numbers from 1-9. The age of free online gaming is now upon us. It is remarkable how much progress has been made in the free online gaming market in the past five or so years. Earlier this decade when people heard “free game” horrible images of freeware games made by college kids in their spare time came to mind, games that looked like early 1980s PC RPG betas. No longer. Today there are literally dozens of free to play games in almost every genre. Maple Story alone, a free to play 2D MMORPG released in 2003, now boasts over 56 million accounts worldwide 1. Just in case you’re wondering, that blows World of Warcraft with its 10 million users out of the water. While MMORPGs are the most common genre of free gaming, there are free games in every field. Shot Online and Albatross18 are both free golfing games with a level of depth rarely found in the retail golfing market. Games like GunZ: The Duel, Wolf Team, War Rock, and Soldier Front offer FPS experiences ranging from frag fests to tactical team coordinated matches. Its difficult to think of a genre that isn’t covered. There are several excellent free racing games such as the simple yet realistic racer Project Torque. If you want something more immersing, look no further than the hybrid Racing/RPG game Drift City which has several fully explorable cities filled with side missions and places to explore with graphics similar to the retail Grand Theft Auto games. If you like to mix rocket launchers with your racers, the free market delivers; Upshift Strikeracer is all about rockets, mines, and other nasty weapons to blow the other players out of the race. Even traditional sports are covered. Freestyle Street Basketball is a simple yet addictive game where each match lasts five minutes, perfect for the casual player. If you’re a soccer fan than try Kicks Online.

I’ve mentioned only a fraction of the free to play games available and it almost feels like a crime to have left out such great games as Fly For Fun, Exteel, Gunbound, and the dozens of other games now accessible by anyone with an Internet connection. Now, dear reader, you must be convinced that we are now entering the age of free gaming, but I have one more shock for you. This is only the beginning. Even as I write this there are dozens of top quality games in beta testing either here in America or in Japan and Korea. Beautiful games like Neosteam and a Gundam MMO are in the works. The list of free online games available and under construction is in the hundreds. Many former pay to play games have been liberated from their monthly fees. Archlord, RF Online, Savage, Anarchy Online, and Shadow Bane are now available to the masses for free. Surely this is a trend that will continue.

The next time you consider pulling out the credit card to activate a subscription or purchase a game online, think twice and give a free to play game a chance. You might be surprised by what you find. If you’re looking for a resource site to read a bit about the best free games out there, I’d recommend checking out MMOHub.

World of Warcraft is a real-time strategy game which is now playing by the largest number of gamers in all over the world. World of Warcraft III Reign of Chaos was developed by Blizzard Entertainment on July 3, 2002 in the United States of America (North America). It was published by Blizzard Entertainment United States of America (North America) Sierra Entertainment (Europe) and in Capcom (Japan). This was the second part after the tremendous success of Warcraft Orcs & Humans and is the third game set in Warcraft Universe. After the incredible success of World of Warcraft 3 an expansion pack named Frozen Throne was developed and released by Blizzard Entertainment on July 1 2003 to add some more spice in this game.

The World of Warcraft III Reign of Chaos and the expansion pack of World of Warcraft III Frozen Throne proved its uniqueness and became the world’s most popular game series ever released. According to a report, World of Warcraft III touched the height of 4.5 million units of CDs and DVDs shipped to the retail stores and unexpectedly over a million of CDs and DVDs were sold within a month. Therefore, World of Warcraft III won many awards as well as the tile of “Game of the Year”.

The events played out in Warcraft III eventually set the stage for Blizzard’s first MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). Mentioned below are some key facts of World of Warcraft. It will help you in understanding the game more easily.

PLOT OF THE WORLD OF WARCRAFT III:

It’s entirely through cinematic and cut scenes, with an additional information available in the Manual of the game. The First option of the game is Campaign, divided into five sections. The first section is tutorial that tells you the whole story of the game and also a guide of “how to play the game”. The other parts tell you the story from different point of views about the races humans of Lordaeron, the Undead Scourge, the Orcs, and the Night Elves. In the previous versions of Warcraft games, there were only two races which were Orcs and Humans, but when the Warcraft III launched the Night Elves and the Undead Scourge were added as playable races.

When the game begins the Thrall which is the leader of the Orcs appears walking from his house in his nightmare. He is warned by someone from the back of the Burning Legion (a demon army known as the Burning Legion intent on Azeroth’s destruction corrupted the race of Orcs, sent them through a portal to attack Azeroth). When he wakes up, he encounters with a man called “the prophet”. THE PROPHET exclaims that his dream was an indication more than a nightmare. After the correspondence with Prophet, he goes back to his army and leads them in an exodus from Lordaeron to the forgotten lands of Kalimdor from where the players are supposed to begin the game.

For players to play on there are several maps of different sizes available in the game. Some maps are the location of large plains and fields while the others are with river, mountains, seas and cliffs. In Campaign or Multiplayer mode, the map is initially covered with the black fog, remains unrevealed until the player’s hero or any allied force explores the area of the map. Once the allied forces or hero explore the area, the map will be revealed and you can see the specific explored area on your mini map (located on the bottom left corner of your screen). Areas that have been explored but are no longer in use will again get covered with the fog of war.

There are only three main resources that need to be managed in the game Gold, Lumber, and Food. Gold and lumber are very important things and play a vital role in the construction of buildings and units. Whereas, your control on units is subject to the number of foods you have. More food means more Units. The maximum allowed food is 120 at a time, through which you can control 120 units including peon/soul (workers), wagons and other controlling units. Some maps of Warcraft III have an exceptional limit of 200 foods.

This game also includes “CREEPS”, computer controlled units that are hostile to all players. Neutral creeps guard the key areas, such as Gold mines or any neutral tech building. Moreover, players can pick experience points, gold, and special items by killing them through their heroes.

Players can pick their heroes from a variety of Taverns. There are basically 3 types of Heroes:

1. Strength (POWER, means more HP (hit point))

2. Agility (SPEED, means more AS (attacking speed))

3. Intelligence (SPELL CASTER, means more MANA (from which a hero can casts his spells)

After selecting a hero you will see that there are two bars appearing in the middle of your screen. First is the red bar indicating your HP and second one is the blue bar indicating the MANA level of your hero. If you want your hero to become strongest, try to achieve the highest level of your hero and that is 25.

There is a Day/Night cycle in Warcraft III having some advantages and disadvantages. All the neutral creeps will fall asleep at night, so it’s safe to scout at night. Depending upon your chosen race, it can either be advantageous or harmful for your hero.

Mentioned above are some basic facts of World of Warcraft III. By remembering these tips you can easily play and enjoy the world’s best selling game ever.

Renting video games has finally evolved. I remember the old days of visiting Blockbuster upon a new games release only to be disappointed by the sight of empty shelves, I had gotten there too late. Fortunately due to the expansion of video game rental into the online world this is no longer a problem. We will take a few moments and explore a little bit about why you don’t have to drive to your local video rental store anymore. Online game rental is the future, it’s easy, it’s fast, it’s cheap, and it’s the only way to go.

Signing up for these services is a complete breeze. Your first step is to visit one of these online game rental providers sites and sign up, most of them offer a free trial. You can simply browse their immense catalog of games, some of these companies have well over 6,000 titles spanning across multiple video game systems. You then select your title, or titles, and depending on your payment plan you can take one, two, three, or four games out at a time. Meanwhile you select other games for your queue and the second you decide to send one back the next one in your queue is mailed to you instantly. There are no late fees, and hidden charges.

The advantages over typical local video game rental are unarguable, but other benefits come along with many online game rental services. You can actually buy these games from the services, and the great part about that is that most of them you can buy for much cheaper than you would find at local game stores like Gamestop for example. Also, don’t forget about all the rentals available for hand-held systems like Nintendo DS that you plain and simple will not find at your local video rental stores.

With most online services you can pre-queue games before they are even released. In doing this you can get new releases at the same speed you would from any game store. Customer service and support are also working at full capacity with these services. They have normal hours of operation and are reachable by phone at essentially all hours of the day.

So stop wasting your money at Blockbuster or other movie rental stores, stop wasting your money at Bestbuy, Gamespot, or other local video game stores… plain and simple – STOP WASTING YOUR MONEY! You will save time, money and cut out frustration when you finally decide to rent video games online. Online services like Gamefly completely decimate any of your local competition in pricing, selection and availability. When more and more game developers are pumping out more and more quality games, why make yourself choose between 1 or 2 to play a month? Why drive to 3 or 4 different rental stores just to see if they have what you’re looking for? Why let the high price of buying games, or the constraint of renting them locally, ruin your gaming experience? Get with the times and sign up for an online game rental service today.

“When players of massive multiplayer online roleplaying games (MMORPGs) talk about “”death penalties”", they refer to the resources they lose when the character they are playing dies. Usually this can be anything from invested time, items they acquired in long play sessions or their virtual currency. Recent games, like World of Warcraft (WoW) avoid that penalty in order to make the game “”more fun”". Unfortunately it’s not as easy to remove real casualties that result from those games – from suicides of addicted players to parents who neglect their children to the point they starve while they are playing World of Warcraft.

Not all stories of excessive play end that bad, but the extent of the problem is being underestimated. Those high profile cases are certainly the saddest examples of what can result from excessive play. But in regards to the people who are affected by serious online gaming addiction, they represent only the tip of the iceberg. What goes unnoticed are the thousands of stories of players who get involved in an online game to the point that they seriously neglect or even abandon school, work, friends and families. There are no statistics on the depressions that result from extensive immersion in virtual worlds. There are no statistics showing how many careers have been destroyed this way. There are no statistics showing how many divorces this has caused.

As one of the oldest MMORPGs, Everquest is still very popular with around 450,000 subscribers. A google search for “”everquest addiction”" returns 234,000 results. But it gets worse: Final Fantasy XI currently has 650,000 players and it’s still growing fast. Number of results returned for “”final fantasy xi addiction”"? 2,140,000. That’s 10 pages for every single gamer. While not all of them are directly related to cases of addiction, it certainly shows the importance of the issue. If for every player of a game, ten feel compelled to discuss a possible addiction, it’s a phenomenon that has to be taken seriously.

There are also signs in the offline world that this problem is existing and growing. In July 2006, the first detox center for gaming addicts in Europe opens in Amsterdam. More than 20 players have already been enlisted in the 8 weeks program. They range from 13 to 30 years of age, showing that this is not something that only happens to teenagers. In Canada and the US there are already multiple clinics and even in China a facility has opened already.

Families and friends of affected players are often at a loss as to how they can help them. Addicted players will often react disinterested or even aggressive when confronted with their behavior. They become socially isolated, no longer accessible to persons that used to be close to them and tend to loose interest in anything that happens outside of their game worlds. A successful anti-addiction strategy thus has to come from within.

One possible solution was unintentionally described over a hundred years ago: “”There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it “” Oscar Wilde might have got it dead on for online gamers. Constantly struggling in their virtual world to get better equipment, more money and a higher level and looking for a way to advance faster, online gamers are usually trapped in a vicious cycle. But what happens if those challenges become obsolete? If they simply achieve those goals without effort? What if you can cheat?

Single player games have cheat codes, allowing you to bypass any difficulties of a game with a few “”code words”". Everyone who used a cheat code in a game knows, that from there on the hours of entertainment are numbered. It is simply no longer of interest to invest your time since all achievements have become meaningless. Fortunately for addicted players, this also holds true for online games. Only, there are no cheat codes. What there is though, are unintentional flaws, glitches and bugs in the games. If you know them, you can skip difficult parts, get rewards with ease and cut down on the time investment significantly. Swimming in virtual currency after a few mouse clicks tends to remove the incentive to ever spend hours again, trying to get it.

There are sites that specifically research those loop holes in order to outwit the game companies. Depending on the game someone is addicted to, they can find help. For Everquest, Final Fantasy XI and World of Warcraft exploits are by now freely available through a simple google search. If you want to help someone, compile a list of those sites.

Vindictus  is a “hack and slash” MMORPG created by devCAT, an internal studio of Korean free-to-play game publisher Nexon. Vindictus is a prequel to the popular MMORPG Mabinogi and is known as Mabinogi Heroes outside of North America and Europe.

Vindictus takes place in the same setting used in Mabinogi, but is placed chronologically several hundred years prior to the first game during a period of war and strife. Nexon America, Nexon’s North American division, announced the new name on March 12, 2010 at the Game Developers’ Conference in San Francisco.

Vindictus follows Nexon’s traditional free-to-play model. The game itself will be free to download and play and charged no purchase price. The game will contain some type of virtual item shop to purchase in-game items to enhance the player’s character’s appearance and abilities.

Development

The name was changed from Mabinogi Heroes to Vindictus. Vindictus is said to be derived from two words: Vindicate (maintain, uphold, or defend, OR clear of accusation, blame, suspicion, or doubt with supporting proof) and Vindictive (having or showing a strong or unreasoning desire for revenge).

Combat system

Vindictus uses the Source engine to allow players to interact extensively with the environment. Environmental objects can be destroyed or picked up and wielded as weapons. Combat is described as “kind of brutal, like a bullfight, or Monster Hunter” and will require a lot of teamwork.

Classes

Vindictus’ “Classes” and “characters” are one and the same. When beginning the game, players have a choice to play as one of three characters, each of which has different combat skills and abilities. Players are free to alter certain aspects of their character’s appearance, but basic abilities and combat styles are set at character creation. They are gender-locked.

Characters

There are going to be 5 main characters. There are 3 playable characters at the moment, Karok and Kai will be released later in the Korean version.

* Lann: Lann is a male character described as “An intrepid warrior with a passion for weapons.” The character specializes in dual-wielding weapons, especially swords. The character is a fast-attack melee class that starts out wearing light armor (though he gains that capability to wearing heavier armor as he levels up) who relies on speed to win battles.

* Fiona: Fiona is a female character described as a “balanced warrior who wields a sword and shield.” Fiona is a defensive melee character who is able to wear heavy armor at character creation and acquires the ability to wear plate mail as she levels.

* Evie: Evie is a female magician who uses different types of magic to help the player and the party.

Later, Evie can equip and use battle scythes.

* Karok: A giant who uses large, column-like weapons. Karok will soon be available in the Korean version.

* Kai: A male archer that has a druid like appearance with his armor. Kai is unavailable in the Korean version. There is no release date announced for Kai.

Customization

There is a dyeing system that allows players to dye clothing and weapons for an entirely unique appearance. At character creation, people may customize eye and hair color, hair style, height, underwear, etc. Paying for premium character creation option will give players access to a wider variety of customization options.
